Hello, my fellow aspiring physiotherapists! Today, let's dive into a topic that's often overshadowed by long lectures and cadaver labs – the importance of prioritizing your well-being and mental stability! Let's explore how we keep our cups and hearts full!
As we immerse ourselves in the intricacies of musculoskeletal anatomy and the wonders of gait analysis, it's easy to lose sight of the world beyond grad life. But let's not forget that we're more than just budding physical therapists – we're vibrant, dynamic individuals with passions and interests outside of the classroom and clinical walls!
So, my fellow wellness warriors, let's talk about making time for friends, prioritizing mental health, and embracing the richness of life in San Francisco. From beach bonfires at Ocean Beach to weekend surf sessions and invigorating hikes in the Marin Headlands, our city is brimming with opportunities for adventure and relaxation.
And let's not overlook the culinary oasis that await us – from mouthwatering food trucks to cozy cafes and, of course, our favorite Irish Pub, where the craic is always mighty! Whether it's indulging in gourmet cuisine or savoring the California sun with friends, let's make time to nourish our souls as well as our minds.
But perhaps most importantly, let's acknowledge the vital role of maintaining a social life in safeguarding our mental health. As a Wellness Coordinator for my cohort in DPT school, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community and support. From game nights to farmers markets on Sundays, our shared experiences remind us that we're never alone in this journey.
And when the weight of academia feels overwhelming, remember that your support system is all around you – your fellow students, professors, and the wealth of resources UCSF offers for our well-being. But also, don't underestimate the healing power of friends, family, and significant others who stand beside us through every triumph and challenge.
As graduate students at UCSF, we're no strangers to the unique challenges that come with pursuing higher education in a demanding field. The pressure to excel academically, the constant juggling act of balancing coursework with a packed schedule, exam after exam, upcoming clinicals, and personal commitments – it can all take a toll on our mental well-being.
Don't forget to nurture your connection with yourself. Whether it's finding solace in a rejuvenating yoga class, pouring your thoughts onto paper through journaling, perhaps even launching your own blog, or exploring wellness apps that cater to your needs. Of course, let's not overlook the joy of spending quality time with friends, immersing yourself in the captivating world of a smutty fantasy book (hehe), or simply granting yourself a much-needed day off from the demands of school to catch up on some well-deserved sleep. Remember, at the heart of it all, prioritize yourself and your well-being above all else!
But no need to dwell solely on the challenges – let's also acknowledge the resilience and strength that lie within each of us. As graduate students at UCSF, we're part of a community that values holistic well-being and recognizes the importance of supporting one another.
Speaking of Mental Health- Story Time: my first Anatomy Practical was a scene straight out of a thriller movie. I had a major panic attack, something that's not new to me, but very inconvenient when you need to use your brain power. I failed the exam miserably, unable to even grasp my pencil let alone think. As I stood amidst the Cadavers, my body's sympathetic nervous system kicked into overdrive, triggering a cascade of physiological responses. My heart raced, pumping blood rapidly to my muscles in preparation for fight or flight. In the midst of this physiological turmoil, my cognitive function was impaired, rendering me unable to be of any use to myself. Tears streamed and I wanted to crawl under the nearest rock and never come out again. But guess what, a group of women in my cohort surrounded me with love and we all went out for crepes and everything was fine again in an instant.
That's where resources like the Student Health and Counseling Services at UCSF come into play, providing a safe space for students to seek support and guidance when they need it most. Whether it's individual counseling, group therapy sessions, or workshops on stress management and self-care, these resources are here to remind us that we're not alone in our struggles.
So, my fellow future healers, let's embrace the art of balance – balancing our studies with our passions, our ambitions with our well-being. Let's savor every moment of this remarkable journey and remember that it's okay not to always feel okay. Coming from someone who cries on the regular, believe me, it's healing and healthy! Together, we'll navigate the highs and lows, emerging stronger and more resilient than ever before.
Here's to finding balance, embracing life, and thriving in DPT school – and may your journey be as enriching as it is rewarding!
