A Glimpse into My Personal Journey
Welcome to my little corner of the internet! Let me introduce myself! I'm Helena, a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student enrolled in the UCSF/SFSU program, class of 2026!
My journey into the world of physical therapy has been anything but conventional. Previously, I worked in the Midwest as an Environmental Planner in local government, with a focus on water and air quality. However, despite the importance of my work, I found myself yearning for something more fulfilling—a career where I could directly impact people's lives in a holistic way. This realization, along with many other life twists and turns, led me to pursue Physical Therapy.
My passion for holistic well-being has been a constant thread throughout my life, woven from my rural farmstead upbringing, and rooted in my love of yoga, a practice I began absorbing myself in almost two decades ago. Being raised on a ranch in a rural community, I've always understood the innate connection between humanity and the earth, and the healing power of embracing nature's lessons and gifts.
In 2006 I took my first yoga class, and by 2009 I was completely hooked- going to yoga 3-4 times a week. In 2017, I completed my 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training through an immersive experience in Rishikesh, India. This journey deepened my understanding of the mind-body connection and solidified my desire to pursue a career centered on helping others achieve multidimensional wellness.
An active lifestyle is inherent to my being and I have a deep affection for adventure. Whether I'm shredding the slopes snowboarding, being thrashed by waves surfing, exploring the ocean depths scuba diving, or finding my center in hot yoga, I experience the greatest joy when I’m connected with nature. I'm also a devoted cat mom, a novice film photographer, a bookworm, and a culinary enthusiast—stay tuned for my upcoming grad student meal blog!!
Despite my roots in the East Coast countryside, I was irresistibly drawn to the vibrant energy of San Francisco—a city where innovation, diversity, and community converge in extraordinary ways. I quickly fell in love with California's ocean, mountains, and its endless opportunities and adventure. It was here that my heart was set on attending UCSF and pursuing physical therapy.
Through this blog, I aim to share my experiences, insights, challenges, and triumphs as I navigate the thrilling journey of becoming a Physical Therapist. Join me as I explore the intersections of movement, wellness, and rehabilitation, striving to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others—one step at a time. Thank you for embarking on this adventure with me!"
