Welcome to the whirlwind of your first year pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy! Let's be honest—no one said it would be easy, but I'm here to uncover the hidden truths about this challenging journey.
Firstly, brace yourself, because this will be one of the toughest things you'll ever do. From the rigorous curriculum to the demanding schedule, your first year isn't for the faint of heart. However, amidst the chaos, you'll forge incredible friendships bound to last a lifetime. Some of these bonds may form through shared trauma, but there's something special about facing obstacles together.
Let's talk about the curriculum. Anatomy—buckle up, because it's about to get real! The first term is like a battle royale, testing your mental fortitude and pushing you to your limits. However, you'll surprise yourself. You'll learn more than you ever thought possible and come out feeling like a bona fide anatomy aficionado.
But it doesn't stop there. Second and third terms? They're no walk in the park either. As the saying goes, 'it doesn't get easier, you just get used to it.' Just when you think you've got a handle on things, another wave of exams, practicals, spot checks, and assignments comes crashing down. Four exams, two practicals, and a spot check within a three week span? Been there, done that. It's like that Harry Potter line, 'You're going to suffer, but you're going to be happy about it.
This experience will evoke every emotion under the sun. From the exhilaration of acing an exam to the frustration of facing extreme burnout, you'll ride a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Some days you'll feel like you know so much and the next you feel completely clueless. Trust me, you will prevail! And here's the kicker—it's worth it. Every tear, every moment of doubt—it's all worth it.
Amidst the endless study sessions, there's a silver lining: the friendships you'll form along the way. Without your fellow SPT's (Student of Physical Therapy) by your side, this journey would be a whole lot harder and frankly, unachievable.
Now, onto the main point: the knowledge you'll gain is truly invaluable. You're acquiring skills to empower individuals to regain control over their bodies, enhance their quality of life, and achieve optimal health in every aspect of their lives, physically, mentally and beyond. Whenever doubt creeps in, reconnect with your 'Why.' We're all here because we're driven by compassion. Amidst the chaos, let this guiding principle steer you forward.
As well-spoken professor David W. Orr once said, 'The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind.'
Remember, we're embarking on a journey to become healers, and that path is profoundly special and rewarding.
With each step forward, let us remember the deep and lasting impact we have the potential to make, and let that be our guiding light as we forge ahead into the future of physical therapy.

Hello! My name is Claire, I am a new student in the UCSF/SFSU DPT program starting in June! One of your classmates sent your blog to us on our discord chat and I just want to thank you so much for your blog! I haven't even started the program yet but I have been dealing with a lot of unnecessary stress over the things I don't know yet and can't control. I love your enthusiasm and drive, your posts have helped me learn a lot about what my life is going to look like for the next 3 years but also how to embrace it with confidence. Thanks again, and I can't wait to continue reading your posts!
Claire,
Firstly, congratulations on your acceptance into the program! What an exciting journey you have ahead of you :)
I'm thrilled to hear that my posts have already made a positive impact on your mindset as you prepare to embark on this new chapter - I'm honored to hear that my enthusiasm has resonated with you. I started my blog with the intention of doing just that!
Starting a program like this can indeed come with its fair share of stress and uncertainty, but please know that you're not alone in feeling that way. It's completely normal to have moments of doubt and anxiety, especially when facing the unknown.
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your thoughts with me. Your kind words fuel my own enthusiasm to continue sharing my experiences with you and others in the program. I wish you all the best as you prepare to start in June, and I look forward to hearing about your own adventures along the way as I'm sure we will eventually get the opportunity to meet!
Hi Helena, I'm an upcoming DPT student too! Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm reading it right a few days before the program starts. And so great to know that your career before was enviromental planner! My major was Urban and Enviromental Planning. Hope to meet you in person soon!
I was an Environmental Planner for most of my career! Hope we get to meet soon and that you’re enjoying the program so far ☺️
